With temperatures expected to reach into the 40s across much of Massachusetts on Monday, a fast-moving weather system could bring a brief period of light snow showers and rain to the state’s southeastern corner in the morning.

The storm is expected to leave around a half-inch or less of snow in New Bedford, Plymouth, Barnstable and other communities on and near Cape Cod. But with slippery roads possible in those areas during morning commuting hours, the National Weather Service issued a special weather statement for parts of Bristol, Plymouth and Barnstable counties, warning of light snow showers and spotty freezing rain. With temperatures under freezing in the morning, the weather service said drivers should use caution, particularly when crossing bridges and overpasses — which can freeze before other sections of roadway.

Monday is otherwise expected to stay dry across the state, with clouds clearing gradually throughout the day. The weather service said the snow and rain were not forecast to cross north of the Massachusetts-Connecticut border.

Around 6 a.m., the weather service said the storm had started to exit Connecticut and would clear Massachusetts by the mid-to-late morning.

Forecasters are eying another storm to develop late this week, between late Thursday and Saturday. With days left for the forecast to develop, weather service meteorologists said conditions could favor rain with the potential for some limited snow.
